Harmony of Love

Description: Apples and Oranges by Barrett is song where he enumerates the distinctly opposite set of traits observed between the girl who “got a flip-top pack of cigarettes in her packet” and himself. The song parodies the traditional idiom of comparing apples with oranges and lends harmony to incommesurablity of the fruits. Since Barrett was fond of painting which he later pursued in the post-Floyd years, it could be also a possibility that he found the origin of the song in Paul Cezanne’s 1889 painting Pommes et Oranges which he must have seen during his formative years at the Camberwell Art School in South London.
