The Gyre

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,

The sensation of colour and sounds in a gyre can be expressed visually to narrate the irrational as a part of an individual’s psychological development. W B Yeats used this symbolic element of gyre – a complex three dimensional figure that simultaneously winds and unwinds in poems like The Second Coming and Coole Park. To him the gyre was an important metaphor for the Celtic Revival and also to symbolize the cyclical pattern in history where time winds and unwinds. The upward spiral also connotes to the ascent of the soul.
